Phosphorus Compounds of Cotton Embryos and Their Changes during Germination.

چکیده
The phosphorus compounds of cotton embryos, particularly ribonucleic (RNA) and deoxyribonucleic (DNA) acid, and their metabolism during germination have not been intensively investigated with modern methods of analysis. In the period 1913 to 1918 Anderson (1) and Rather (9) elucidated the true nature of phytic acid, the principal form of seed phosphorus. Although Anderson obtained the hexaphosphate of inositol, Rather found only the pentaphosphoric acid derivative clue to the activity of the enzyme phytase. In 1946 Fontaine and co-workers (5) presented results showing an increase in the percentage of phosphorus in the inorganic form during germination. Pons et al (8) developed an analytical system for analysis of the phosplhorus fractions of plant materials and in 1953 reported data on the phytin-, inorganic-, lipid-, ester-, ancl nucleic acid-P contents of cotton embryos. More recently Ergle and Eaton (3) reported on the amounts of similar fractions, plus protein-P, in various cotton tissues including 10-clay-old ovules andl mature embryos. In the present paper information on the phosphorus compoundls of cotton embryos has been extended to include RNA and DNA and the changes which they and the above mentioned phosphorus fractions undergo duriing germination and early seedling development. Results on Paymaster 54B, Deltapine TPSA, and Mesilla Valley Acala, representative of early, intermediate, and late maturing cottons, respectively, are compared.

Cotton Seedling Preemergence Damping-Off Incited by Rhizopus oryzae and Pythium spp. and Its Biological Control with Trichoderma spp.
ABSTRACT Planting the cotton cv. Sure-Grow 747 in cotton seedling disease plots during the 2001 growing season resulted in high levels of preemergence damping-off among the seedlings. Four cotton pathogens, Pythium aphanidermatum, P. ultimum, an unidentified Pythium sp., and Rhizopus oryzae, were isolated from diseased seed embryos and seedlings. Disease incited by the Pythium spp. could be con...
متن کاملRoot exudates of transgenic cotton and their effects on Fusarium oxysporum.
The components of the root exudates from two transgenic insect-resistant cotton lines and their parental cotton lines, and their effects on the growth of Fusarium oxysporum were investigated. The results demonstrated that the resistance of transgenic insect-resistant cotton to F. oxysporum was significantly reduced compared with their parental lines. Likewise, the root exudates from transgenic ...
متن کاملChanges in RNA Splicing in Developing Soybean (Glycine max) Embryos
Developing soybean seeds accumulate oils, proteins, and carbohydrates that are used as oxidizable substrates providing metabolic precursors and energy during seed germination. The accumulation of these storage compounds in developing seeds is highly regulated at multiple levels, including at transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation. RNA sequencing was used to provide comprehensive in...
متن کاملMetabolically active glucosides in oleaceae seeds: I. The effects of germination, growth, and hormone treatments.
The seeds of six woody species of Oleaceae representing three genera, contain high concentrations of water-soluble glucosides, with major absorption maxima below 240 nanometers. In Fraxinus americana seeds three of these compounds, designated GL-3, GL-5, and GL-6, account for almost 10% of the dry weight. They are found in the endosperm and embryo but not in the pericarp. While the level of GL-...
متن کاملChanges in Nucleic Acid Fractions of Seed Components of Red Pine (Pinus resinosa Ait.) during Germination.
Changes in nucleic acid fractions of Pinus resinosa during seed germination were studied. At various stages of seed germination, embryos and megagametophytes were surgically separated and nucleic acids were extracted separately by a phenol-method. Total nucleic acids were fractionated on single-layer methylated albumin kieselguhr (MAK) columns. Total nucleic acids in embryos increased significa...
